64 Bit Version Of Firefox Could See Further Delays
Here we go again…
Back in the day, Internet Explorer on Windows was the only web browser that had a native 64-bit build, then other vendors followed, including Mozilla, which was hinting at the upcoming 64 bit builds for the general availability too. However, then they changed their mind and the development has slowed down.
Fast forward to 2014 (or fast backward) and after pretty much everyone had a native 64 bit build, the open source organization has again promised to bring the now necessary x86-64 architecture support on Windows to Firefox.

23 X Times More Performance: Google, Microsoft, Mozilla & Others Join Forces
Will co-develop a new binary format.
It’s nice to see tech giants that are usually competing with one another coming together to work on something that will benefit users all over the globe. The most recent example comes from a new announcement, which details the forthcoming partnership between Mozilla, Microsoft, WebKit engineers and others.
What is it all about? As you might know, when it comes to executing JavaScript files, browsers simply download them from a server, compile them using their own JavaScript engine and then execute. How exactly is this a problem? It is not but there is a ton of improvements that developers can make to speed everything up (such as Mozilla’s ASM.JS, Google’s NativeClient or Microsoft’s TypeScript). However, a newly joined “alliance” aims to make a new binary format called WebAssembly, which should merge all vendor’s efforts into a single compilation target.

Firefox For iPhone Is Coming Soon
Well, that did not take that long.
Back in December, we have reported that Mozilla has finally recognized the importance of iOS and began working on a Firefox web browser for iPhone and iPad.
Now, it looks like the open source organization is ready to share it with the rest of the world. According to a new job listing (where Mozilla is looking for a talented product manager for Firefox Mobile), “a new Firefox for iOS application arriving soon”.

Mozilla Weaves Goodbye To Its $25 Smartphone Dream
As well as future v2.2 updates.
It looks like Mozilla’s plan to conquer the world with a $25 Firefox OS smartphone did not exactly went as planned. According to the recently revealed internal email that was sent by the Chris Beard himself (the CEO of Mozilla), the open source organization has failed to gain any sufficient traction to justify the further significant investments as far as the ultra-low cost smartphone program goes.
“We have not seen sufficient traction for a $25 phone, and we will not pursue all parts of the program. We will focus on efforts that provide a better user experience, rather than focusing on cost alone.”

Firefox’s New Tab Page Will Show Ads & Gather Your Browsing Habits
It looks like Firefox just set itself on fire.
When your market share keeps decreasing month over month, what can you do in order to win back at least some of the lost users? Useful new features? Performance improvements? User interface tweaks? If you have answered to any of these questions “yes” then you are wrong, at least according to Mozilla’s management.
We are not exactly sure what are they thinking but for some reason they have decided that the best way to improve Firefox users experience (or try to squeeze as much money as possible before the browser’s market share drops to single digits (which is already at 11.70% compared to 17.26% a year ago) is to show you ads!

Grab Firefox 38 With Integrated DRM Support And More
Great news for video creators and streaming giants like Netflix that host DRM protected videos. Thanks to the collaboration between Adobe and Mozilla, the latest stable build of Firefox (38) brings a support for Adobe’s Content Decryption Module (CDM), which will be activated when the need arises.
As far as other interesting features go, it now includes Ruby annotation support, has new tab-based preferences (meaning that configuration window will now be opened in a tab, like web page, rather than in a window, yes, just like Google Chrome) and some new HTML5 goodies: BroadcastChannel API, Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) and so on.

Yahoo: Our Search Market Volume Reached A 5 Year High
The keyword here is “reached” not “is at”.
If you want to learn more on how exactly did the new deal (where Yahoo! became a default search engine on Firefox) affected one of the news leaders in the US then look no further than at the recently published financial results by Yahoo!
According to the report, its search volume has reached “a five-year high” with them saying that “the partnership between Yahoo and Mozilla was key to this volume increase”.
However, while Yahoo! search volume did reach a peak, it was unable to sustain it as according to the latest market share data, last month alone the company lost 0.2 points of the US market share, down from 13% to 12.8%

Firefox For Android Crosses The 100 Million Downloads Mark
If you though that Firefox for Android is used only by a very small amount of people then the latest news might change your mind.
According to Mozilla, the mobile version of Firefox has now been downloaded more than 100 million times from the Google Play store alone. In addition to that, it has been consistently rated with more than 4.0 stars, which is a pretty neat accomplishment.
However, what was not revealed was a number of active users, so who knows how many of these are actually same user re-downloading or (possibly) updating the app.

Firefox 37 Will Encrypt Non HTTPS Traffic

In an effort to protect its users privacy, the developers of Firefox web browser have made some serious changes that will allow to encrypt non https (http://) traffic.
How is that even possible? You can thank opportunistic encryption, a technique, which encrypts the communication when connecting to another system. As a result, Firefox will route HTTP (port 80) requests that are usually sent in the cleartext to a port of server administrator’s choice. In addition to that, users won’t experience any delays as connections will be fully established before they are even used.
