Facebook Donates $60,000 To MozillaStarts testing mozjpeg 2.0.

When it comes to standard JPEG compression, it’s not exactly all sunshine and rainbows, in fact, most of the times the pictures look rather bad.

Well, things might change for the better soon, at least for Facebook pictures as the company has just announced its plans to test Mozilla’s mozjpeg 2.0 format. In addition to that, the social giant has also donated $60,000 in an effort to fund the development of said format and mozjpeg 3.0.

Having already acquired Instagram for a cool $1 billion, Facebook’s next target might indeed be Opera, which, depending on its future plans (dumbing down + social integration), will upset a lot of Opera’s loyal users.

RockMelt 0.9.64.253 Is Here!RockMelt is now better than ever thanks to all the security and performance improvements in the latest stable version of Chromium, namely Chromium 13.

Theme support in the New Tab page has been added as well and can be gotten from here.

Over 100 bugs were also fixed with this release to make RockMelt even more reliable which includes resolving an issue a few users experienced with having to log into Facebook every time, Facebook being a big part of RockMelt.

Opera Working To Fix Facebook Video Calling

Opera Working To Fix Facebook Video CallingFacebook unveiled its new video calling feature this week right after Google+ came out and boasted with Hangouts (video chats with up to ten people). Unfortunately, Opera is not supported by Facebook for this feature at present. An Opera employee had the following to say about the matter:

The reason for Facebook’s block seems to be a problem with our version of Opera on OS X. Facebook’s plug-in installs itself as FacebookVideoCalling.webplugin on Mac, but our browser only recognises plug-ins with a .plugin extension. This causes their plug-in detection scripts to think the installation failed, triggering a renewed installation process. Our fearless engineers are working to fix this issue in Opera code as soon as possible, and we’re also in talks with Facebook to find a quick resolution to the problem. – Patrick H. Lauke, Web Evangelist in the Developer Relations Team at Opera
