Google Chrome, Firefox To Have A Metro Version For Windows 8

Opera looking into it.

Although it was previously known that Firefox will include a Metro like UI, the team behind Mozilla’s web browser only recently started the development. However, turns out, Google is also developing a Google Chrome Metro version, which will be available for the Windows 8 consumers.

In addition to Google’s announcement, the search giant has also confirmed that they will work on a touch optimized version of Google Chrome for the desktop.

What about other web browsers? Safari remains silent, however, ArsTehnica contacted Opera Software and received the following statement, “Unfortunately we can’t comment on any specifics yet, other than we are currently looking into Windows 8. The new OS and the Metro UI offers an interesting new platform and we know users will want to run Opera on it.”

We are curious to find out, how exactly will Google Chrome and Firefox differentiate themselves from the IE10 Metro, UI wise.

I don’t expect FF or Chrome Metro will differentiate their UI’s from IE10, and I’m certainly not curious to find out.  All the major browsers are simplifying the UI’s and all became more Chrome-like in the past few years, instead of differentiating.

I’m only curious if FF and Chrome Metro will handle all the touch, panning, etc. smoothly and responsively and if they maintain or improve their rendering and Javascript and/or Dart speeds.

The browser just has to work and flow well.  It doesn’t have to be pretty.  The whole point of the UI is to get out of the way anyway.  I’m not using a browser for the UI.

In that sense, I guess touching, panning, pinching, enlarging, etc. are part of the UI, so that better work well!  But again, no differentiating required.  If IE10 does these things well, and the other browsers match, that’s good enough for me.

Chrome & Mozilla will/can wait till Opera releases and copy the Opera’s design with slight difference.

The browser world has gone to shit in all honesty…

    Clarification:

“As with extensions, we are holding off releasing a Metro Styled version of our browser before the masses adopt it and make it vastly popular”

    – Opera

The same with tabs (and tabs above the address bar), popup blocker, sessions, integrated search, real zoom, speed dial, etc.?

You cannot argue with those merits.

Opera once was an dare I say “innovative” company.

They used to bring new ideas to the table.

Now they are slow, often lagging behind the others.

You do not become innovative with your past inventions. You need to keep innovating.

We are in the future ondaah, not in the past.

The point is that Opera (still) invents things, and then these things become popular when some other browser does it. Remember apps written using web tech? Yep, another thing Opera did ages ago.

          • Anonymous says:

They are innovating albeit slowly which is not good in this age ruled by tech.

If they really cared, they would improve their bugs and actually demonstrate why their browser is better.

          • Anonymous says:

You seem to be confused. All browsers have bugs, and all browsers are working on fixing bugs, and there’s no single “better browser” for everyone. They all have their pros and cons.

Claiming that a browser maker doesn’t care is just trolling.

And as for innovation, Chrome shows that that’s not really necessary.

Opera will have a Metro version too.The more the better, The best things is that all of the current available browsers have Metro version, such as Avant browser, maxthon, slim,,, Small browsers have more features in my opinion.
