It’s nice to see tech giants that are usually competing with one another coming together to work on something that will benefit users all over the globe. The most recent example comes from a new announcement, which details the forthcoming partnership between Mozilla, Microsoft, WebKit engineers and others.

What is it all about? As you might know, when it comes to executing JavaScript files, browsers simply download them from a server, compile them using their own JavaScript engine and then execute. How exactly is this a problem? It is not but there is a ton of improvements that developers can make to speed everything up (such as Mozilla’s ASM.JS, Google’s NativeClient or Microsoft’s TypeScript). However, a newly joined “alliance” aims to make a new binary format called WebAssembly, which should merge all vendor’s efforts into a single compilation target.

In any case, today Microsoft has shared more details about the different implementations that Edge utilizes to render everything properly.

In one example it was shown how using an incorrect charset or malformed refresh equiv (assuming it was a mistake by the developer) will ruin the web site, at least in some way.

In an interesting turn of events, which we view as positive news for its users, Opera Software will soon be releasing an experimental build of Opera Mobile Emulator, which will use WebKit prefixes to combat ignorant web developers. In addition to that, since it will be integrated into Opera’s core, you can expect to see same prefixes across all Opera web browsers in the near future.

58 Safari Bugs Patched To Prevent Drive By AttacksApple updated Safari to version 5.1 yesterday, patching 58 security vulnerabilities and beefing up the browser with several new features, including sandboxing on Mac OS X 10.7.

Safari 5.1 is bundled with Lion, the operating system Apple released earlier yesterday. Good news is that it also runs on Mac OS X 10.6 i.e. Snow Leopard. A separate Safari update to version 5.0.6 was also issued today for users running Mac OS X 10.5, or Leopard.

Download Baidu Browser Beta

Baidu, China’s largest search engine has launched the Beta version of its own web browser, which was in development for quite some time, as reported earlier by FavBrowser.

Codenamed FlyFlow, Baidu Browser uses the WebKit rendering engine that seems to be a number one choice for many web browser developers these days.

Furthermore, FlyFlow has over 30,000 available applications for its users to choose from, ranging from online games to videos.

Brings terminal into 21st century.

If you’ve been playing with the terminal for many years, like this guy, then 80s like command line interface is probably already wired into your brain.

Why does it have to be like that? Good question.

Steven Wittens had the same issue and came up with a solution: he took WebKit and built a rich command line interface called TermKit.
