As Internet Explorer is heading towards the 49% market share mark and Firefox continues its downtrend, we see interesting times are approaching indeed, but as for now, let’s focus on what had happened over the course of June.

No surprises here, Internet Explorer has lost some of its market share again, down from 54.27% to 53.68% (0.59 point decrease).

55% Of Firefox 4 Users Move To New Version In First WeekIn the week after the arrival of Firefox 5, Firefox 4’s market share dropped by more than half, going from 16% to 7.2% according to analytics company StatCounter. During the same period, Firefox 5’s share of the market rose form 0.50% to 10%, signifying that the new version took on the decline of Firefox 4 and more.

By comparison, Chrome’s most recent upgrade made Firefox’s gains seem less dramatic. With the release of Chrome 12, Chrome 11’s share plummeted from 17% to 2.7% in the first seven days, a drop of approximately 84% in usage. Chrome 12’s market share, on the other hand, jolted up from 0.70% to 15.5% in the same time frame.

This discomfort centers around the retirement of Firefox 4 from security support as well as their inability to test any new version beforehand.

How Many Firefox Users Install Extensions?

Recently, Mozilla has revealed some of the Firefox add-on installation statistics for curious people to check out.

According to the blog post, an incredible 85% of Firefox 4 users have add-ons installed, excluding Personas or other extensions that are bundled with other software packages aka forced installations. Mozilla has also stated that due to upgrades, the number varies but managed to stay at 85-89%.

To put it into perspective: more than 60 million Firefox users use add-ons every day with the average of 5 add-ons per web browser install.

No More Security Updates For Firefox 4Along with the release of Firefox 5 on Tuesday, Mozilla showed off the vulnerabilities that had been patched in that version of Firefox as well as in 2010’s Firefox 3.6, making no mention of any bugs fixed in Firefox 4, however. The reason for this is that Firefox 4 has reached its EOL, short for End of Life, with regard to vulnerability patches according to Mozilla.
