Chrome’s developer channel pushed “Packaged Apps” to the v22 builds recently, which allows applications to be launched separately from Chrome (use its own window). Moreover, Packaged Apps have quite a few capabilities as they can interact with network and hardware devices, as well as media apps.
Packaged Apps bear much semblance to Opera Widgets. Though the basic concept didn’t work for Opera, Chrome may make it work. Juxtaposed, Chrome developers build more exciting, deep apps, and have access to a lot more capabilities (like Shells and native-competitive web technology).
It will be interesting to see if a revival of Mozilla’s Prism will occur to make Mozilla’s Marketplace competitive.
