Microsoft Edge Updates On PC and Mobile

By | October 30, 2015 | 0 Comments

Microsoft Edge Updates On PC and MobileJust recently, the software giant did something they have never done before, released new Windows 10 insider preview builds for both PC and mobile.

So why exactly are these build a worth trying? Well, at least on the mobile side, Edge no longer feels like a pre-alpha piece of software, which is not saying much but still. It does feel way smoother than before and brings the following new features:

– Ability to change the default search engine to Google, at least for some of the users and here we are still stick with Bing and there is no way to do so. Yes, advanced settings are broken.
– Overall performance and usability improvements.
– Much improved UI for easier and faster access.
– Search suggestions now use much more screen real estate, which is good.
– Data sync across different devices although it seems to be broken as well.

Ability to Change the Default Search Engine Coming to Microsoft EdgeOn Windows 10 Mobile.

Well, it looks like one of the most annoying thing about Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Mobile will soon be gone.

According to one of the leakers on Twitter, users will be able to change the default search engine in Microsoft Edge on the Windows 10 Mobile operating system. When? Just like most of the things with WP, “soon”.

Who knows, maybe the build that is coming early this week will be the one who brings this feature back, as IE Mobile had it.

Microsoft Edge Extensions Delayed, Again

By | October 22, 2015 | 0 Comments

Microsoft Edge Extensions Delayed, AgainSort of?

Well, it looks like Microsoft Edge won’t be that usable during this year after all, at least for most users. According to the software giant itself, the extensions were pushed back to 2016 and according to our own sources, it’s likely to happen sometime in spring of 2016, so don’t expect anything in January or so.

In the statement, they said that Microsoft is “committed to providing customers with a personalized web experience, which is why bringing extensions to Microsoft Edge continues to be a high priority. We’re actively working to develop a secure extension model to make the safest and most reliable browser for our customers, and look forward to sharing more in a future Windows 10 update in 2016.”

Microsoft Starts Abusing Windows 10 Users to Gain Market Share

Microsoft Starts Abusing Windows 10 Users to Gain Market ShareWhen Opera complained about bundling Internet Explorer with Windows 7 to the EU and asked to include the famous browser ballot screen, we thought it wasn’t the best decision for the consumers as most have no idea what they are doing on their machines and an extra pop-up could have confused them even more.

Then, Mozilla complained that setting Firefox as default web browser in Windows 10 is not exactly as straightforward as it should be, and then we too did not understand what was the fuss all about. It was easy, at least for us.

Well, third time is the charm, as it looks like Microsoft has started nagging Windows 10 users to give their (incomplete and broken) Edge browser another go. According to the latest report, this is what happens in the latest Windows 10 preview (build 10568) when you switch to Chrome, Firefox or any other (better) web browser:

Edge Might Have Around 40 Million Active Users: 1 Out of 3 Pick It Over CompetitorsMath and more math.

Few days ago, Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 has now been installed on more than 110 million PCs. Naturally, that made us wonder: how many of those people have tried Microsoft Edge and most Importantly, how many of them actually kept using it.

While there are tons of different metrics we could use to determine the number of real Edge users, such as: active Opera Desktop Users (from their quarterly reports, 55 million in July) vs. Opera / Edge market share (1.36% and 2.40% respectively), which would give us an indication that ~97 million use Microsoft Edge, we have decided to go the other way and compare Windows 10 market share vs. Edge market share.

Windows 10 Build 10551 Reveals New Edge FeaturesNo extensions support in sight.

Even though Microsoft has promised to bring extensions support later this year, it looks like the recently leaked Windows 10 build still lacks one of the most widely requested and pretty much critical feature for today’s modern web browsers.

So what exactly was revealed? The ability to synchronize your bookmarks (yay, although it’s switched by default) and a proper mouse support, which means that you will finally be able to open links in a new window by simply clicking the scroll wheel.

Microsoft Edge Will Natively Support Skype Later This YearAnd few other bits.

In the world where everyone wants to move away from the plug-ins, it looks like developers behind Microsoft Edge feel the same way.

As detailed in the recent Skype Blog post, Microsoft’s web browser now supports ORTC API, which enables features like scalable video coding and simulcast. Therefore, users soon won’t have to install any Skype plug-ins and will be able to make video or voice calls without any effort.

While the is no exact ETA (as it’s software after all), the software giant did say that Skype for Web will be coming later this year.

Microsoft Edge Will Be Coming To Xbox One, Extensions Is A PriorityAnd few other bits…

Today, Microsoft’s Edge team has hosted another AMA on Twitter, resulting in some new (yet expect) information.

For example: a long time ago the software giant has confirmed that Xbox One will receive Windows 10 later this year and unsurprisingly, today they have also confirmed that Microsoft Edge will be included as well.

When asked about extensions, it was revealed that it is a priority for Microsoft and that they are still working on it, no ETA yet though.
