EU to Oblige Microsoft to Offer Competitors Browsers

The European Commission will require Microsoft to give users of its ubiquitous Windows operating system the opportunity to choose between different Internet browsers to avoid breaching EU competition rules, the bloc’s antitrust spokesman told EurActiv.

Although the Commission is still officially waiting for a response from Microsoft to the complaints raised last January, the outcome of this new battle with the IT giant is already taking form.

Internet Explorer 8 Hits RTM

On February 21st, Microsoft has finished and compiled the RTM version of Internet Explorer 8, Build: 8.0.6001.18691

At this moment, they is preparing to distribute it via TechNet/MSDN and Connect before releasing to public.

As always, Microsoft is not releasing any Internet Explorer 8 Final schedule to public yet.

A new Pwn2Own hack contest which should begin in the middle of the March 2009 is set to test Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, Safari and Opera web browsers running on Windows 7 Beta or RC.

Unlike previous year competition, where “white hackers” tried to hack computer operating systems (Mac OS was hacked first), this year it will focus on web browsers and mobile operating systems (Android, iPhone, Symbian, Windows Mobile, RIM).

More details should be announced within the upcoming weeks.

Norway Sites Urges Internet Explorer 6 Users to Upgrade

Trygve Lie is reporting a small revolution in Norway. Apparently, Finn.no has placed a small text box which recommends old IE6 users to upgrade their browser to a newer one and asked other webmasters do the same.

The ad which is visible to Internet Explorer 6 users only today has also appeared in the Norway’s largest web site vg.no. Api.no plans to put the same message box to about 60 online newspapers front pages as well. Continue Reading

Internet Explorer 8 RTM in March

According to guys from Tech ARP, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 RTM (Release to Manufacturing/Marketing) will be released on March, 2009, probably during last 2 weeks.

As it says: “This is because Microsoft plans to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009”

During RTM release, OEMs will have an opportunity to integrate Internet Explorer 8 to Windows XP and/or Windows Vista operating systems.
