Windows vs. Ubuntu (Linux): Web BrowsersWhen it comes to performance, there is no such thing as too much. Therefore, today we will find out, what operating system you should use to achieve the best possible results and whether or not it’s worth the switch.

Test Details

Hardware:

AMD Athlon II X2 235e

AMD Radeon HD 6700

6GB RAM

Operating Systems:

Windows 7 SP1 x64

Ubuntu 12.04 x64

Benchmarks:

Peacekeeper; Dromaeo DOM Core; Impact HTML5; GUIMark- HTML5 Vector Chart; and Kraken.

Browsers:

Chrome 18.0.1025.151 (32-bit); Firefox 14.0.1 (32-bit); Opera 12.0 (32-bit).

Method:

Run the benchmarks in each browser four times—hardware acceleration on twice and off twice—on each OS, then average (arithmetic mean).

Benchmark Results (Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 12)

Conclusion

Google Chrome works best on Ubuntu and it beat Windows version by 14%.

Mozilla Firefox runs best on Windows, which is faster than Ubuntu version by 36%.

Opera achieved better results running on Windows than it did on Ubuntu, the difference was 9%.

So here you have it, 2 out of 3 of the Windows browsers were faster than they were on Ubuntu.

That just proves that Canonical should have ditched Mozilla Firefox as default browser long time ago. :)

    No it doesn’t….

Firefox is not using HW acceleration unless you have intel or Nvidia.

If you did have a nvidia/intel card you would find that firefox in Ubuntu is on par or faster than Windows.

Using native browsers, would be a solution to get the best results!

I talk about native browsers for Windows, like Internet Explorer ( I know, its not a browser)
    and etc. ( I dont know Windows®)

Ubuntu has Midori and others that use Webkit, with their GTK port they are quite fast

At Kubuntu or KDE you can use Konqueror.

AND AGAIN: These browsers are likely going to have the best performance in handling, etc.!

    • Wrong go! Exclusivity to a plattform doent mean being native at all.

All the three browsers in this test were using their respective native versions, according to the plattform.

Non native would be to use Windows versions running on Linux, with WINE.

Laugh hard at your comment!! LOL
The part “I know, its not a browser) and etc. ( I dont know Windows®)” LOL

I’ve used Konqueror in Fedora KDE, and although it’s not a great browser (specially when we talk about new web technologies (e.g HTML5) but it’s a good alternative after all.

That is why I’m glad to use Chromium on my Ubuntu, that gives me the best performance =D

  5. Mehran says:

I live half of my life in Windows and the second half in Linux, and I mostly use Firefox & Opera, and I do confirm that Opera is way much better than Firefox when we talk about Linux.

And what’s about memory usage? It seems that FF takes less memory on Ubuntu.
