Opera's desktop revenue is still based on advertising. You see ads when using the Google search from the search box.

Opera has already tried the ad supported model for the desktop - was a failure. Wont be repeating that mistake.

I don't think Opera wants to advertise in a way you think. I guess they'll provide solutions for mobile operators, like integrating AdMarvel's technique into Opera Turbo and/or Mobile and/or Mini. So that OEMs have the possibility to buy a complete service. They don't have to find a way to integrate ads themselves, they just have to find companies willing to advertise.

From a business point of view, it's a clever move from Opera. As for Mobile and Mini might become "ad-supported", I don't like the idea as a user. Time will tell, if it was a good move.

One of the Opera higher-ups recently said something about how they are the only for-profit pure browser maker in the game (with MS selling a lot of stuff, Apple selling a lot of stuff, Google being an advertising company and Mozilla being non-profit). This move puts them in the same group as Google. I've no idea about what this move will mean for me, so consequently I don't know if I will like it, but I think it's interesting to note.

There is an discussion on slashdot about Firefox's heavy dependence on Google. Google is not a Search company but an advertisement company (I think most of its revenue comes from AdSense). Opera is not going to be a Browser company alone anymore, ad it makes sense.
