Since the launch of Chrome, relations between Mozilla and Google were affected. And although contract between them expires on 2011, Michael Baker, the CEO of Mozilla considered the possibility of search contract end. As they are not completely sure about Google’s plans to renew it. As the result, they are started to look for alternatives.

Many analysts consider it as a good movement because during Chrome growth, Mozilla will depend on Google Inc. more than Google does on Firefox. Selling default search engine spot in Firefox would be both, beneficial and not. Search giants such as Yahoo or Live would pay much more than Google do. However, how many of Firefox users would actually use a new search provider?

Back in April, we’ve reported about the upcoming Yahoo! project – BrowserPlus. While it’s still in Beta, Yahoo finally decided to release it for a public use (sneak peek). BrowserPlus is a technology for web browsers that allows developers to create rich web applications with desktop capabilities. There are few demos which can be found here to better understand how BrowserPlus works and what it is for. From their FAQ:

How do I install BrowserPlus?

BrowserPlus is designed to be installed by the sites that use it. We encourage you to let one of our demos or the Service Explorer guide you through the process.

During the “sneak peek,” BrowserPlus can only used on sites owned by Yahoo! or its partners.

It looks like Yahoo will be launching yet another new project. This one is called BrowserPlus and it took them 3 years to finish it. So what exactly is Yahoo Browser Plus? Well, as it says in their FAQ:

Yahoo! BrowserPlus is software that lets you do more inside your web browser. BrowserPlus makes it easy to install and use web plugins for a richer experience on the internet.

There’s more detailed answer to this question in Larw.com

After 3 years of hiding out in the campuses of Yahoo! it’s good to finally have something external to show for it. Most exciting is the release of BrowserPlus, a software and software distribution framework that allows device developers (desktop, mobile, etc.) to seamlessly bridge the browser programming environment (DHTML, JS) to any component they can dream up (VoIP, image manipulation, data caching, etc.). Some time ago we created a platform team to focus on device software at Yahoo! and this is what has emerged amidst the quickly shifting strategy of the mothership. The 1.0 release of BrowserPlus is intended only for use by Yahoo! sites to enhance customer experiences; however, in the coming months, developers might expect the ability to use components on their own sites. (If you’re interested in this, send us feedback). In the meantime, you can hack the framework on your own system after you’ve installed it to start experimenting. You can experience BrowserPlus currently through the PhotoDropper module on Mash, though direct installs are available for mac or pc.

In case you’d like to test it, there’s one problem. You can join Yahoo Mash by an invite only.

Response to Opera and Google Mobile Search Deal" BORDER="0" WIDTH="128" HEIGHT="128" ALIGN="right" />Some time ago Opera and Google made a mobile search deal (read more about it here). Haavard from my.opera.com found Yahoo! response to this deal on news.yahoo.com

I’m just wondering….
Was it really Yahoo! who has decided to cancel this deal? Anyone from Opera team would like to comment maybe? :-)

Without explaining why their year-old deal has ended, Yahoo said it decided to call off the agreement. “Yahoo has elected not to continue its mobile search partnership with Opera at this time,” it said in a statement.

“Consumers with Opera browsers will continue to have access to Yahoo oneSearch, and as long-standing partners, Opera and Yahoo will continue to work together.”
