Bolt 1.5 Mobile Browser out of Beta

With the release of version 1.5, mobile web browser Bolt has finally reached stable release tree. Claiming to be more than 15% faster than previous Beta 3 release, it aims to compete against Opera Mini or other popular web browsers.

Bolt has quite two strong points: it’s free and works with multiple platforms, such as: Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and pretty much every Java based handset. Also, they claim that “it loads pages at least 25%-50% faster than competing mobile browsers”.

Play NES Games from Web Browser

Let’s have some fun. Shall we? Our reader Nox has stumbled upon a JavaScript NES emulator JSNES which allows you to play most popular NES games straight from your web browser.

Although it works with every web browser, script author (Ben Firshman) recommends using Chrome, as it’s best suited for such tasks.

Web Browser for Kids – Surf Knight

One more web browser for kids is trying to enter the market. This one is called Surf Knight.

Surf Knight is based on Microsoft Internet Explorer (everyone loves IE, right?).

Once you launch it for the first time, it requires you to enter a root password and set some parental settings:

As founder Safari Knight explains: It’s a trident based web browser with child friendly user interface and parental controls. Unlike other online safety products, Surf Knight comes absolutely free and we endorse charitable organizations such as Big brothers Big sisters.

Overall, it’s all really simple, just as it should be. Big navigation buttons, friendly looking start page and clean interface. The only thing which I didn’t like was bad looking (Windows 3.1 style) configuration window. Since it’s the 1st version only, it will probably be fixed.

P.S. Haven’t seen Safari based browser for kids yet.

Pogo Web Browser Preview

Some time ago I’ve received an invitation to try Pogo Web Browser so downloaded Pogo 1.1 Beta and started to play with it.

First thing I noticed during the download process was its size. Pogo is a heavy browser and its installation uses more than 50 megabytes (54.5 MB) of disk space.

It took some time to install it but installation went smooth and without any errors.

Once you launch Pogo, it offers you to transfer bookmarks from other web browsers. Since it’s a beta only, Safari and Firefox weren’t located.

This is the part where I just had to click skip. Takes way too long.

Unlike other web browsers, Pogo keeps your tabs in the bottom (with small thumbnails). You can easily click on any blank one to open new page. All that simple.

As this is Firefox based web browser, settings are not much different.

This is one of the features which I really enjoyed. Quick search bar.

Overall, Pogo was way too big and used too many resources. Maybe in the near future this won’t be an issue anymore. But hey, it’s a 3D web browser. What did you expect? Low resources usage?

Netscape Navigator – Alive Again?

Is it? Not really. However, some time ago AOL announced that they will stop Netscape Navigator support after February 1’st… Well, things changed a bit, they’ve decided to “extend” its support for one more month (March 1’st).

As it says in their blog post:

Mozilla, Flock and AOL are working together to provide tools to ease the migration of existing Netscape browser users to our recommended Flock and Firefox alternatives. Both Flock and Firefox are built on the same Mozilla Firefox codebase.

There will be an update made available for Netscape 9 users through the established Netscape browser update feature that will streamline the process of choosing from these two great browser alternatives.
