Apple Rules The Phone And Tablet Browsing Market

Mobile browsing has more than doubled in the last year and now accounts for over 6% of all online activity, a Web statistics company said today.

Apple’s Safari, the default browser on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, rules the usage share roost, representing 53% of the mobile browsing market.

Two trends are clear. Phones and tablets are stealing browsing share from desktops at an accelerated pace. - Vince Vizzaccaro, a vice president with metrics firm Net Applications

Users still do nearly all of the their browsing from a desktop or notebook computer, Net Applications’ numbers showed, but that’s changing: A year ago, desktop browsing controlled a 97.2% share, compared to 93.2% in August.

The other trend is Apple’s obvious advantage. In the last 12 months, Safari’s share has increased by 9.3 percentage points, and now owns a majority of the smartphone and tablet browsing market. The clear loser has been Opera Mini, which lost 12.5 points in the same period, reducing its share to 20.8%.

Apple’s iPhone and iPad account for the bulk of Safari’s share, although the former, which has a nearly three-year lead on the latter, remained slightly ahead last month. According to Net Applications, 27.4% of all mobile browsing was done from an iPhone, while 22.5% was conducted on an iPad.

Opera Mini 5.1 Final for Android Released

After releasing the final version of Opera Mini 5.1 for a bunch of Java supporting phones and BlackBerry devices, Opera Software has just finalized its Android and made it available for you to download.

One of the new features in version 5.1 is improved rendering for high-resolution devices, such as HTC EVO 4G or Motorola Droid X.

They also have improved kinetic scrolling and added ability to set Opera Mini as your default web browser.

Opera and MegaFon Signs a Mobile Internet Deal

In yesterday’s press release, Opera Software and Russian mobile operator MegaFon, has announced a new partnership, under which MegaFon’s “Unlimited Internet with Opera Mini” package will be made available to all Russian territories (that’s more than 53 million mobile subscribers total).

Back in September 2009, MegaFon signed a similar deal that provided unlimited mobile web access to Moscow region only.

However, as press release says:

The dramatic user growth seen as the result of the “Unlimited Internet with Opera Mini” plan persuaded MegaFon to provide this package in all Russian regions in their coverage area.
Ural and Siberia were the next areas to gain access to fast and cost-effective mobile web via Opera Mini after Moscow. The remaining regions will gain access from June 2010.

May, 2010 – Internet Explorer, Firefox Share Goes Down; Chrome, Opera and Safari – Up

Another month, another market report. Let’s begin.

Internet Explorer market share fell down by 0.26 point, from 59.95% to 59.69%.

Firefox still struggles to reach 25% market share, this time it went down from 24.59% to 24.35% (0.24 point decrease).

Not a big surprise here, Chrome managed to increase its market share by another 0.32 point, up from 6.73% to 7.05%.

Safari slowly nears 5% market share mark, increasing its share by 0.05 point, form 4.72% to 4.77%.

Opera did very well last month and grabbed a nice piece of share, going up from 2.30% to 2.43% (0.13 point increase).

Strangely enough, Opera Mini lost 0.05 point of the market share, falling down from 0.79% to 0.74%.

Opera Mini for iPhone: 2.6 Million Users

It appears that Opera Mini for the iPhone is doing really well.

According to the Opera’s most recent “State of the Mobile Web” report, browser is already more than 2.6 million unique users.

That makes Apple iPhone the 3rd most popular device running Opera Mini.

Additionally, company has reported a 6.6% users increase from March 2010, with a total user count of over 58.9 million.
