With the Opera browser being in it’s second beta cycle for the Kestrel release and Dragonfly only having entered Alpha, can we as developers expect a GA version of Dragonfly to accompany the GA release of Kestrel?

After a lot of waiting, Opera Dragonfly Alpha, Firebug competitor is finally released. You can try it by downloading Opera 9.5 Beta 2 (after installation is completed, go to Tools > Advanced > Developer Tools).

How is it different from Firebug? First of all, you won’t ever have to update it. It acts like a web application. Another interesting Opera Dragonfly feature is an ability to debug your phone or even a TV. By the way, Opera Dragonfly is released on an open source license.

Click on the Picture to Enlarge

Other Opera Dragonfly features includes: JavaScript debugger, DOM inspector, improved error console and DOM debugging.

The upcoming Opera Dragonfly release will also add CSS, JavaScript and DOM editing as well as many other interesting things.

Visit Opera Dragonfly Home Page.

Overall, Opera Dragonfly team did a great job so far and I’m looking forward to hear from them (and their competitors) soon. Product looks really promising and competition is always a good thing. What about you? Have you tried it already?

Update: It looks like Opera Dragonfly article was removed from Wikipedia?

More news about Opera Dragonfly… It looks like the web page was updated (hidden comment is now removed as well). New Opera Dragonfly web page now offers an opportunity to subscribe into Opera’s products mailing list, got some “sneaky” stuff as well as the following text:

“A fast-flying long-bodied predatory insect of the order Odonata, suborder Anisoptera
Valued by humans for their ability to spot and hunt down harmful bugs from great distances”

What about sneaky text? They’re using some random hidden text in the top left corner. By the way, invisible text is really a bad idea. It’s also called “Spam” and Google Quality Guidelines suggest you to “Avoid hidden text or hidden links”. Your web page could be banned from search engine results pages by the way….
