What’s the solution?

Joe Drew, the developer of Firefox web browser is considering writing a hardware accelerated backend to canvas, possibly in collaboration with other browser maker (you are welcome to join).

As he said:

Writing a hardware accelerated backend to canvas is tough, but it’s doable. We might try to use Cairo’s OpenGL backend. We also might try collaborating with some of the other browser maker. As I’m sure it’s clear, we haven’t quite worked out what the path to success will be, just that we need one.

When is it coming out?

Joe has not specified any time frame, but hinted about such possibility in the next Firefox release (aka Firefox 5).

Now here is an interesting spin on a regular web browser. Basically, it’s a programmable web browser, designed with automation in mind. Think about it as a blend of Safari and OS X Apple Script utility.

According to Fake web page, you can use it to automate various web tasks, such as: filling forms and/or capturing screenshots. Developers may also find it beneficial, as they can use Fake to graphically configure automated tests for their web applications.

However, there are two downsides: Mac OS X only and a price of $29.95.

Google itself describes those releases as lacking certain privacy features and not appropriate for general consumer use.

He has also noted that they still have “a very very long way to go” and there are no prediction dates yet.

This vulnerability allows phishing sites to silently read all the user data from hard drive without him knowing that.

There is however a workaround for Safari users on Windows OS.

Open Safari and select Preferences… from the Safari menu.
Choose the RSS tab from the top of the Preferences window.
Click on the Default RSS reader pop-up and select an application other than Safari.

Apple has not made information available on when a fix for this issue will be released.

What’s new in this release?

WebKit
This release is primarily an update to the version of WebKit in use by OmniWeb. OmniWeb is now based on the same WebKit in use by Safari 3.1. This includes the latest security patches and features included with Safari 3.1.x such as downloadable fonts, CSS Animation, HTML 5 media tags and client side database storage.

Bugs
When using Leopard’s Spaces, OmniWeb will no longer switch spaces when entering a URL or creating a new workspace.
