By | November 15, 2015 | 1 Comment

Download Firefox for iPhone and iPadYes, the wait is over.

Long time ago, when Firefox was still a pretty dominant web browser, Mozilla said that they see no point to release a half-baked version of Firefox for iOS that uses WebKit rather than Gecko. Fast forward to now and the open source organization is singing another song.

The result? Firefox for iOS is finally here and can be downloaded by anyone on iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Yes, it uses WebKit, which makes it more of a FireFaux web browser, but Mozilla still hopes to get at least some of the users with key selling points like data sync between Firefox Desktop and Mobile, intuitive tab management, Private Browsing and flexible search.

Mozilla Starts Firefox For IOS Rollout, Hint: It’s PromisingNew Zealand is first on the list.

After refusing to create Firefox for iOS in the first place and them giving in to the pressure, Mozilla has finally announced the limited availability of Firefox for Apple’s devices.

Interestingly enough, the first preview is only available for the consumers in New Zealand with more countries said to be added later this year. We are not entirely sure why did Mozilla choose NZ (although we can guess), but the open source organization said that now their goal is to simply collect feedback and use it to shape up the overall development of Firefox for iOS.

Well, it seems like no one was safe in this year’s Pwn2Own hacking competition as all 4 major web browsers have failed to protect the users.

The star of this contest however was Jung Hoon Lee (lokihardt) who has managed to reap $225,000 in rewards, breaking through Chrome’s security with a buffer overflow (which earned him $110,000) and then exploiting Microsoft’s Internet Explorer ($65,000 in rewards), followed by Apple’s Safari ($50,000 in rewards).

That should be enough to improve his life for good.

Firefox Finally Coming To iPhone & iPadThe months of declining Firefox market share might soon come to an end or at least a slow down, as according to Mozilla’s Release Manager, Lukas Blakk, has announced that after years of refusal, the open source organization is finally bringing Firefox to iOS.

He wrote, “We need to be where our users are so we’re going to get Firefox on iOS #mozlandia”

Why the sudden change? While we may never know all the possible reasons, one of the key elements could be a shift in Apple’s strategy itself, where the tech giant (since the WWDC 2014) announced the availability of WKWebView for all the developers:

When Apple revealed iOS7, it featured an improved Nitro JavaScript engine, providing with a great boost in performance for various 1st party apps. How so? Well, as it turned out, due to various restrictions, developers were left with a slower version instead.
