  1. nobody says:

if only they’ve released it for platforms that actually matter, like damn android.
opera mini is nice et al, but it is a toy browser still

        or you stop being clueless?
answer us some questions to show, that you arent:
        1) why opera invests into a dying platform (winMo 6.5)?
        2) why opera invests into a dead platform ([any] symbian)?
        3) why opera invests into a platform that noone gives a damn (meego)?
        4) why opera treats android as a least attractive platform? [releasing a mini over 1.5 years after android debut), generally ignoring major android UI guidelines: menu key, default app, broadcasts etc]

how is opera supposed to be a major mobile player, if it repeatedly bids the wrong horse? android and iOs are current and future kings. they are both treated worse than an operating system from company that is going to bankrupt (nokia, look at their financial results..) and clearly has absolutely no clue about smartphones. where is the logic?

They are definitely working on an Android version of Opera Mobile. They have already said that due to the problems on the platform, Opera Mobile will only be available to the OEMs and manufacturers. There is already a final version of Opera Mobile 10 but it is not available for users to download directly. I’m sure they will come up with something soon, so you cannot say they are not working on it.
Regarding the other platform IOS, Apple will never allow Opera Mobile on it, so they have released Opera Mini on it which has been very successful. So I think they are trying to be on every platform and have been reasonably successful so far. Look at Firefox, they are available on only one platform so far and not very successful on it either. Considering that, Opera has been doing a very good job. I think we will get a beta of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Android pretty soon.

Why don’t you take your own suggestion about not being so clueless? The fact that you call Symbian a dead OS is pretty humorous, as it still has the LARGEST market share of any mobile OS. Go look at http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_os-ww-monthly-200812-201007

They’re investing in winmo because a lot of people use that one as well. 2% of users (according to wikipedia) is similar to the number of linux users – and they’re investing in linux as well.

They aren’t allowed to make an Iphone browser and they have already made an Android version. The menu button does just what I’d expect it to do, and setting default app works like a charm. I don’t know what broadcasts are in terms of android UI guidelines so I can’t comment on that.

Nokia is still making a lot of money and they are still the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer. It is clear that there is at least one person who has even less a clue about smartphones than they do, and that person is you. Stop posting rubbish.

1: There’s alot of people using it, and there will probably be some similarities to the upcoming WinMo 7
2: Saying symbian is a dead platfrom is like saying windows is a dead platform and noone uses it. Symbian is still the most used mobile OS. Don’t think about 50% market share qualify as a dead platform.
3: Meego development started as a spare time project for those at Opera AS that had Meego devices. And besides it’s one of the new projects from the worlds largest mobile phone developer.
4:Maybe because there’s suchs diffrences on Android. from version 1.5 to 2.2, most couldn’t use all features due to most use 1.5. most phone won’t get updates. some phones have used up all of it’s resources by running this operating system.

      Hi. thanks for civilized response.

ad1) Win7 is XNA based, there is NOT A SINGLE line of code that can be ported from winMo codebase. application developed for winMo will in no way benefit development for win7. that is moot point anyway, as MS is going to severly restrict developer’ options :/
ad2) symbian is the most popular mobile OS, by far. I know that. however, what new smartphone uses it? what new smartphones with symbian were recently released and were at least half successful? featurephones running symbian are irrelevant as you cant instal and use opera mobile on them anyway (opera mini is for these). symbian WILL die as most people see, that it is evolving too slow to be of any use.
      3) if that is true, then it is a waste of resources anyway. meeGo will flop, there is a dying company behind it and noone besides this company will use this system while android is both free and mature already. these ‘spare time resources’ should have been spend on opera developer tools as now there is ONE programmer working on them half-time (proof? look at bitBucket commit log, one lone programmer commits something)
      4) differences? backward compatibility is 100%. if something worked with 1.5 it will work with 2.2. so that is a moot point. most android devices have better hardware than top of the line symbian devices or winMo devices (with htc hd2 exception) so this is moot too. yes, android is fragmented, but 2.1 is quite old now, and 1.6 is feature complete enough to run a browser on it.

maybe the reason is different, that being webkit is already an undisputtable king of mobiles, and opera didnt want to risk being ‘the always second’ again. at least they are the best on meeGo. yay opera.

and even if opera wanted to stick with opera mini, they should have had polish it a bit more. some devices cannot set opera mini as a default browser! menu key (present on ALL android devices does nothing usefull, while menu bar (back/fwd etc) is preset at all times, eating screen estate). you cant send a link to opera mini, because of ‘something/whatever’. what kind of quality is that?
