Opera Freedom = Mozilla Jetpack?

By | June 12, 2009

In case you haven’t heard yet, Opera Software is planning to launch/reveal their latest project called Freedom (at least that’s what the URL suggests).

Although it’s too early to speculate, especially when there is so little information revealed so far, we can still check few things while waiting. Lets begin with the logo.

Mozilla Jetpack
Opera Freedom = Mozilla Jetpack?

Opera Freedom
Opera Freedom = Mozilla Jetpack?

Oh well, maybe they just like clouds.

Something more interesting: a slogan:

Mozilla Jetpack
Exploring new ways to extend and personalize the Web

Opera Freedom (as per tweet)
The web, your way

That’s pretty much the same, isn’t?

In any case, it wouldn’t be the first time when Opera Software decides to use graphics and/or names similar to their competitor products (Dragonfly/Firebug). Few more days to wait…

EDIT: As from OnSoftware: Our request for a preview (which would normally be answered with a URL to download the final version under embargo) was answered with a cryptic message stating that Opera will be unveiling ‘a new technology‘ on Tuesday, and that there’ll be a live webcast.

How exactly would Jetpack “reinvent the web”? And why would they claim to “reinvent” it if Mozilla was already doing it?

And how is “Opera Freedom” a similar name to “Mozilla Jetpack”?

You are not making any sense!

    • It’s all about marketing, same with Opera codenames, as mentioned by nobody: “groundbreaking new functionality” which Opera 10 hasn’t delivered (yet).

      >> And how is “Opera Freedom” a similar name to “Mozilla Jetpack”?

I never said it’s a similar name. / = and, or. Edited article so it won’t confuse.

      • heh says:

You are still not making sense.

Opera Turbo alone is groundbreaking for most of the world. Why are you quoting the notorious and obsessive Opera troll “nobody”? Why are you always 100% biased against Opera?

And you didn’t answer the question:

How exactly would Jetpack “reinvent the web”? And why would they claim to “reinvent” it if Mozilla was already doing it?

        • They wouldn’t. It is a marketing thing.

Opera Turbo is based on Opera Mini compression technology and that is not something groundbreaking, because it was already invented by them.

          • heh says:

A marketing thing? What marketing thing?

Turbo is groundbreaking because you can do it on the desktop. And besides, it’s not like Opera Mini, since Opera Mini uses OBML while Opera Turbo sends the site as it is, only compressed.

          • Because claims like those receive more attention. Also, please check “edit” in this post, seems to be a new technology.

As for: “Why are you always 100% biased against Opera?”
I actually spoke with one of the “main” guys from Opera Software and he said: you’ve been very fair to us (can’t exactly recall what was said). And in my own opinion, I actually am.

          • heh says:

But why would Opera claim to be reinventing the web if they are just doing what Mozilla is already doing?

Why would someone from Opera claim that you are fair, when nearly 100% of your comments are critical of Opera? If you are not lying, he was probably just blowing smoke up your butt to be nice, and to get you off his case.

You are definitely biased against Opera, complaining about everything they do.

          • Because criticism can be fair too.

          • heh says:

Your criticism isn’t fair. You constantly berate them for everything, even supporting Microsoft after they broke the law and flaming Opera for reporting their crimes to the authorities.

You are simply unreasonable when it comes to Opera. Why do you hate Opera?

And what is the marketing thing you were talking about?

          • FataL says:

Love and hate usually come together. ;)

For example, I like Opera and use it, but I hate stupid bugs inside it. :P

          • Foo says:

I’m pretty sure Web Accelerator was there before Turbo.

  2. Daniel H. says:

Vygantas you are fair, I assume by one of the “main” guys you meen Espen. :)

    • Mickey says:

Vygantas is anything but fair to Opera. He is clearly biased, and always puts it down for some reason.

Is he a Firefox fanboy or a Chrome fanboy? None of them get as much shit from Vygantas as Opera does. This includes the EU case where both Mozilla and Google joined the complaint, but he’s still only whining about Opera and how evil Opera was for reporting a crime to the authorities.

  3. Perhaps it’ll allow people to serve web pages off their browser? Make it easier to share information.

  4. blah says:

this jetpack thingy look like some userJS/Greasemokey twisted clone.

  5. Freedom refers to the 4 Freedoms according to the book of Stallman
four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

    * The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
    * The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
    * The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
    * The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

    Opera is going FLOSS!!!

Would you feel less of an ‘obligation’ to use FF is there was another good FLOSS multiplatform browser?

Its ‘non-free’ and I still use it. Its that good.

Would open sourcing it make it easier for people to use Opera extensions to FF3 and vice versa?

Either that or this is who they will have performing at the launch:
    http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=4353136

Dont worry, its not a rickroll.

  6. Ghost says:

Well, I must say you are extremely biased against Opera. As an independent observer I have noticed this, so it’s pretty bad. I don’t blame you, I personally am biased against IE8, Vista and in fact most Microsoft products. Anyway, have you checked the source code of Opera’s “Freedom” page? I just didn’t notice that in your article… But I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

And I don’t think saying they are re-inventing the web, if they are just making a ‘better’ version of Jetpack, wouldn’t be a great marketing ploy. Any halfwit would see it was a load of balls, and it would in fact work against them.

And just to say, I’m not pro-Opera. I’m not pro-any-browser. I use them all, randomly and impartially, except IE8 which I really can’t stand, though I still use it… occasionally.
