Opera 10 to Fully Support SVG

By | November 7, 2008

In the “Opera China and Web Standards” conversation, the following information was revealed:

“Our CTO, Håkon Wium Lie, is the co-founder of CSS, and we are the first browser to fully support SVG”

What is SVG?

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a new graphics file format and Web development language based on XML. SVG enables Web developers and designers to create dynamically generated, high-quality graphics from real-time data with precise structural and visual control.

Good job, Opera.

Thanks to mabdul for a link.

First of all, SVG has been a W3 recommendation since 2001 (in development since 1998), so I personally wouldn’t call it “new”.

Secondly, nowhere in that article does any Opera employee say there will be full support in Opera 10.

“Full” sort of depends on your definition, anyway. Presumably he’s referring to the fact that Opera supports SVG SMIL animation and SVG fonts, as well as displaying SVG as images, which is more than any other browser does at this point.

Perhaps Opera 10 will get a 100% rating based on the W3 test suite, but that’s not necessarily what he’s saying here…

i’d gladly exchange that useless svg gimmick (as long as IE has no support – it is gimmick) for onContextMenu support in opera. that one thing alone makes opera quite useless in rich desktop-like applications

same goes for various other JS non-standards, that are de facto standards on the web

and what the hell with silverlight support?

is it really wise to waste time and resources on something that is needed by mobiles only (if!) while mainstream desktop browser has clear and visible problems with rendering most common pages on the net?

    Well done for supporting SVG!

The benefit of supporting SVG and the value of SVG in the bigger scheme of things is really amazing. SVG opens doors to writing completely custom GUI controls, layouts and making these software driven. It opens new doors to creativity, and plays well with other XML defined languages.

Yippee for Opera and SVG – go girl!

Just one thing… Opera, please test your software better on Ubuntu this time around.
