May, 2011: Firefox, Chrome, Safari Share Up; Internet Explorer, Opera – Down

It’s getting hot out there as the first month of summer starts and it’s time to yet again, report the top 5 web browsers market share numbers.

Internet Explorer moves closer and closer to the 50% share mark, this time it went down by 0.84 point, from 55.11% to 54.27%.

After previous month’s drop, this time Firefox has recovered some of its market share and went up by 0.08 point, from 21.63% to 21.71%.

Google Chrome continues to add big chunks of the market share for its own good; up from 11.94% to 12.52% (0.58 point increase).

Safari is also doing quite well as its share continues to advance, this time it has increased by 0.13 point, from 7.15% to 7.28%.

For the month of May, Opera took a huge hit as its market share has dropped by 0.11 point, from 2.14% to 2.03%.

Thanks to Net Applications for the graph.

All you remember that Safari here is actually including the mobile version, since there’s no way to tell the difference, it seems. So it’s kind of fake, in a way.

Didn’t knew. Obviously thanx to those Iphones and Ipads. Does Ipad use same Safari or optimised version of Safari for Ipads?

Damn Opera is going down and sad news is Opera is getting better but user base getting smaller :(.

Opera is only now starting to fix the bugs. Who knew if they did this earlier on there would be more users

What are these bugs that are so serious stopping Opera’s market share from rising?? I’ve used it as my primary browser for years and haven’t come across anything major… In the recent builds I haven’t really come across anything at all!

It is not the bugs that are stopping more like the time it takes for them to implement user features and fix their ancient bugs. I cannot dig up archives of bugs for you.

So there’s no way to tell the difference between Safari for computers, phones, and tablets? Why doesn’t Opera do the same?

Yeah they should at least add option to change UA string to desktop version. That wound not only significantly increase their market share but also fix problem with web pages forcing mobile view.

Pity, I would rather use Opera over the other browsers.
