Desktop will stay. Synchronize on all devices – this cannot be removed as mobile feature :) And 14m is still more than I do :)

The Opera desktop browser will be there for many more years, hopefully, but I think it is really very unlikely that it will die within the next few years.
Having a somewhat competitive desktop browser is very valueable as a sync-compagnion for mobile users and it is not sooo expensive when needing to have the knowledge and skill to develop a browser anyway (for mobile browsers, TV browsers etc.).
Also as a heavy and long-time (since Opera 9) Opera desktop user I think the current way the desktop browser goes is just the start of what they have planned and while it won’t necessarily fit the needs of power-users like me it has great potential for future growth :-)

One of the more publicized feature in which they spent more time had been Bookmarks … bookmarks… that thing considered obsolete and without any sense nowadays when they released O15 …

The “awesome and innovative” Stash feature has been removed…

yes, they work exactly as planned O_o … but forgive me if I think they have no idea of what to do and change their plans every day

Opera is better than chrome at the moment in my opinion – I would be sad if it was abandoned.
