Internet Explorer Tax. Sure, Why Not?

Internet Explorer Tax. Sure, Why Not?Free publicity helps.

If you have free cash to burn then here is something to be excited about.

Australia’s tech retailer, Kogan, has decided to charge the Internet Explorer 7 users a 6.8% tax, just because they haven’t upgraded.

Once they open the checkout page, the following pop up will be shown:

Internet Explorer Tax, Why Not?

According to the company, “The way we’ve been able to keep our prices so low is by using technology to make our business efficient and streamlined. One of the things stopping that is our web team having to spend a lot of time making our new website look normal on IE7.”

You can download Internet Explorer 7 from the following page. Good luck.

Is Safari meant to be on there? :P

  2. Bummer says:

notice that upgrading to IE8 & above aren’t options

    which is correct

  3. Shane Bundy says:

I would actually want to see UK sites do that.

I think that this is a good idea, but it penalises those who aren’t tech-literate and don’t know how to upgrade their browser or how to start using a different one.

  4. Guest says:

IE7 is too old technology and should be dropped.

  5. Disq says:

But you don’t need to download it to get the message, just open a current version of IE and open the developer tools (F12) and change the Browser Mode and Document Mode to IE7.  Hit the checkout button on the site, and Voila!, you can see the tax warning.

  6. Sam Coulter says:

Dear Kogan, No need to tax your consumers, just have your tech guys switch the IE and Firefox icons on people.

  7. “You or your admin… has been in a coma”

I dont think insulting users is the best way to make them upgrade, screw this publicity.

You want them to upgrade, make your part and simply drop support for old browsers from your site.

    • Tiago Sá says:

I believe insulting IE7 users for using IE7 is a very appropriate course of action.

I myself don’t develop for IE7 anymore, and when the website’s market so requires, I will charge way more, unless the client specifically states that he doesn’t want IE7 support.

When I heard about this I was happy; for technologies sake. The. I was puzzled. Was this meant to be a joke? If not, expect a lawsuit

    Kogan look like assholes.
