Internet Explorer 9 vs. Google Chrome 7 vs. Firefox 4 (Hardware Acceleration)

By | September 1, 2010

As Google Chrome 7 (dev) now includes hardware acceleration, guys from DownloadSquad decided to test it along with Internet Explorer 9 (developers preview) and Firefox 4 (beta).

What are the results?
Google Chrome 7 utilized the most of the hardware resources, delivering better FPS (frames per second) than Internet Explorer 9 or Firefox 4, which took the last place.

However, as those are not the final builds, don’t draw your conclusions yet, things might change in the future.

Thanks to geek for the news tip.

  1. Interesting. I know what some of you are thinking now – how will Opera (with HW acceleration) stand out in the crowd.
Will see, maybe soon (or maybe not, Haavard is very enigmatic lately).

I think we will see HWA in Opera before the end of this month and it theoretically should be faster than competition (thanks to Vega and other related things). As for Haavard’s tweets I don’t think he was talking about HWA.

I don’t think Opera will have HWA until version 11.

Is this by the same guy from Download Squad?

I don’t know why but I just hate him.

(Probably because he was misinformed on the previous test. These bloggers do no research.)

Nice i get now about 26 FPS with Chrome 7 and 250 fish, with C6 was only 3FPS so it works even on my Intel G31, good job Mr. G.
    Opera now it’s your turn…

Happy to see all browers now have hardware acceleration. Game on!! Now web will start change and more pages will have more animation,..etc.

Chrome UI is neat & very minimal. I like it!!

In a video about Hardware Acceleration which offloads the work to  the graphics card why concentrate on the CPU utilization ?
Chrome was the only one to run by itself  so how much spare capacity did the graphics card have to run the other browsers ?
I would have liked to see the frame rate of Firefox having all the resources of the graphics card to itself.

What are you doing? I get full 100 fps in IE 9, when I test drive it, far faster than chrome 7.

  7. Stu says:

This article must be a joke. Chrome 7’s sorry excuse for HW acceleration doesn’t even compare, in any way, to what Firefox and IE currently have. I’m sure Chrome will get better, but as of now there is no comparison to how much better and faster FF and IE run when it comes to HW acceleration. Anyone who’s tested the 3 should no better than this nonsense. If you don’t, than feel free to keep being sheep and relying on fantasy tales. I test for myself, so I know the truth of the matter.

I get 55FPS with 1000 fish on IE 9. Here is my PCs specs:

AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition Quad-Core CPU
    Asetek Liquid CPU Cooling System
    500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
MSI K9N SLI-F V.2 NVIDIA nForce 570 LT SLI Chipset DDR2/800 SATA RAID
    Corsair 2GB PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel RAM
    Killer M1 10/100/1000 Gigabit PCI
    Vista Home 64-bit
    1100Watt Thermaltake PSU
    NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512mb (x2, SLi)

And btw, the FPS counter only went to 60 maxed. So you have that as a reference point. I was converted to IE when I downloaded 9, after using both Chrome and Firefox extensively. Just my experience.
