Internet Explorer 9 vs. Google Chrome 6 (HTML5 Performance)

By | June 24, 2010

In rather pointless benchmark, DownloadSquad has tested latest Internet Explorer 9 build against Google Chrome 6 dev.

What are the results?
As seen in video above, IE9 annihilated Chrome. However, while it does sound great, author failed to mention that Google Chrome 6 does not really support hardware acceleration (still in early development stage). Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Anyway, more interesting bit from the article is this: he also ran same test on Opera and it was substantially faster that Chrome or Firefox. No, Opera does not yet support hardware acceleration.

Upcoming Firefox 3.7 build (that supports hardware acceleration) was also tested and it was able to keep up with IE9.

It should mostly the same performance once each browser has hardware acceleration. In the end, it will be down to so little differences that nobody will notice anything, as it is now with JavaScript performance.

Unless you are using Internet Explorer, in which case you’ll have lag even when opening a new tab! LOL!

    • Ichann says:

Why am I getting the notion that browser makers are going to release “drivers” for their products?

Please reassure me by saying that I am wrong. Please.

      • nvm says:

        Why would they release drivers?

        • Ichann says:

Why do graphics vendors release drivers?

I dunno. Maybe they would not like the graphics API that windows provides.
Its a hunch. A stupid one, but a hunch nonetheless.

          • Grrblt says:

You only need drivers if you want to let another program use it efficiently. And I’m not really seeing what kind of program you’d want controlling your browser.

          • Ichann says:

            User it efficiently

            And that is the reason.

It’s a crazy world we live in. You’ll never know.
Let’s hope I am utterly wrong.

          • Foo says:

Hardware Vendors release drivers so that the Operating System can “translate” for the software layer.

Interfacing directly with the graphics card would mean compatibility problems with other programs and would require that the browser gets elevated credentials.

It would be less hassle to write an abstraction layer on top of OpenGL/DirectX instead of writing custom drivers for every graphics card for every platform. Not to mention that you’d have to reverse-engineer the binary blobs you have everywhere on Windows and Mac OS.

          • Ichann says:

Yes I know what a driver is.

You people are taking this way out of line. I do not need a lesson in directx or openGL.

            It was just a hunch.

            New topic:
Peanut butter is better than jelly.

            – Considering the texture of PB, it is indeed better than jelly. Findings suggest that a good jelly recipe are as follows………..

Would you like to continue? Or does it seem a bit pointless. A mere idea perhaps?

            Where are the Lols?

          • Ichann says:

Btw. some people need a lesson in rhetorical questions.

          • Foo says:

That’s not a “hunch” you’d get if you know what a driver is.

“Rhetorical” or not, your question makes no sense whatsoever. Trying to make even less sense doesn’t help your attempt at trying to save face.

Interesting this time Opera couldn’t  match the IE Speed in fish tank test. But still they are better off when compared to other browsers in my laptop.

    Way to go IE 9!!!!
IE is definitely showing great improvement!!!!

    • nvm says:

Firefox with HW acceleration beats IE9 with HW acceleration, though.

      • RamaSubbu SK says:

        How ??

        • Foo says:

          By being faster ?!?

          • Ichann says:

I hope you are not reffering to the test done by this retard again. He compared latest minefield to Opera 10.53 or something.

          • Foo says:

Whatever are you talking about? Ramas asked “How”, whatever that means, to nvm’s statement that Firefox is faster than IE9. Opera has nothing to do with that.

        • nvm says:

So how much is Microsoft paying you to be a shill, RamaSubbu?

          • RamaSubbu SK says:

Why can’t you see IE 9 coming back in really good way ? Do you work for any other browsers ?
It is always a good habit to encourage someone who is try to come clean & good.

          • RamaSubbu SK says:

Also, if you are a web developer you would know how much you want IE should be like this. The more the standards it follows less the code you write.

  3. Yeah, but lets wait until Opera gets HW acceleration, I checked this demo with 10.6 on ubuntu today, it was definitely faster then Chrome on this video.
Anyone aware when Chrome will get HWA ??

    • RamaSubbu SK says:

This is ultimate browser evolution direction, in a year or two. all the browsers in this world will have this hardware acceleration.
With more Videos & Games coming online.. The HWA is definitely need in a browser.
I Hope microsoft does this in a good quality way. Then I can have only one browser in my computer.

here are my results in a netbook, mind this is a machine with limited hardware, but thats exactly what makes them also  a good scenario to test

    • RamaSubbu SK says:

Yes, this is expected. Because you have limited hardware. Microsoft clearly says that it needs Video card with WDM drivers (Vista+ only), that means it require hardware accelration. What you are trying is software acceleration, which Microsoft never climbed.

      • web says:

of course, that is why i said is a machine with limited hardware, but is always good to compare pure software performance of the newly released IE9 pp3 . Hardware acceleration is not everything,  thousands of laptops are sold every week that have intel gma sucky edition.

        • RamaSubbu SK says:

Those laptops might be old, they might not have shipped with Vista or Windows 7. All the laptops that ships with Windows 7 would have decent hardware to run IE 9 smooth.
But still anyway your test shows us how much Microsoft is interested in software rendering, even me neither. Fortunately I have some Intel Chipset which run IE 9 platform edition smoothly.
