IE6 No More

IE6 No More
Here comes another campaign to kill Internet Explorer 6 and urge its user to upgrade their browser.

As always, web masters are asked to add a special code into their site (which is ridiculous long) and hope for the best.

Is this any different than previous campaigns?
Well, sort of. You see, unlike failed ones, IE6 No More movement was started by Weebly, a company which has dozens of well-known web sites:

Justin.tv, Disqus, Posterous, Reddit.tv, Divvyshot, Buxfer, Twitluv, Digital Dandelion, Happn.in, Defensio, and 31bits.com (source: Mashable)

Digg and YouTube are considering dropping IE6 support as well.

There is one issue though, which was pointed out by our reader “nobody”:

“corporations are what keep ie6 alive. there are tens of millions of win2000 workstations that are going nowhere, there are 100s of milions of xp s2 machines with everything blocked and locked out that will never be upgraded to ie7.

no site, no matter how big and powerfull is not going to change that. it is a nice move, but people should start to understand the reality they want to change. ie6 lives in corpo environment. and corpos do not give a damn about youtube or myfacebookspace”

    Where is Opera logo?

  2. Žilvinas says:

Yes, where is Opera logo? It’s a shame that we see Internet Explorer 8 logo, but we don’t see Opera.

  3. Supertom says:

Opera is not a browser in the eyes of many so called internet users.

    Funny!

  4. rdsu says:

    Opera!?

  5. Tiago Sá says:

Who cares about Opera anyway? If people who only used IE6 for years would suddenly change to it, their brain would die and they change right back to IE6 again.

Seriously, how much user-friendly can you NOT be?

In any case, corps are not the evil in all this. Seriously, IE6 basically doesn’t work anymore, it’s such a broken browser, only people who can’t actually tell it’s broken (people with no brain that don’t even know what a browser is supposed to be) keep using it with no complaints. Corps are full of those, but viruses and spyware abounds in their machines, and they get what they deserve. Their IT costs rise above the sky and they sink in their own filth. Serves them right, and helps spreading the word if you ask me.

In time, people will finally realize it’s not a matter of trend. They will realize it’s not even a matter of how good your web experience is, because, frankly, they never cared about that to begin with. They will realize it’s a matter of security, a matter of personal direct interest that, if they don’t want their credit card stolen as soon as they open ANY website, they want something decent to travel the web with.

  6. Rafael says:

I got furious with all browsers this month, Opera is the less-worst web browser and it’s never on the listings. =X
Despite the campain have a good objective it’s not good anyway, they neither explain to users the basics: what’s a browser.

  7. metude says:

    Where is Opera logo?
    I won’t use this banner.

please, get a grip. corporations pay a very good money, give you projects that no other smaller company can propose, and in fact, they are shaping the world right now. calling everyone working there ‘brainless idiots’ is.. stupid, simply that – stupid.

believe me, that corpos know how to calculate costs. and you CANT install any mallware on a well-configured xp machine in a well-configured network. even on purpose.

making ie6 worse than it really is IS STUPID. and doesnt make you look more credible in eyes of these who actually know a bit about the matter. a bit = more than press releases and phanboy speach.

ie6 is used in corporations because it is better than firefox and other browsers in what corporations need the browser to do. simple as that. does firefox support sharepoint services like ie6 does? no. so get on with it – it is a concious decision, not ‘brainless and idiotic’ one. there are people can look further than their fears and innuendos, and calculate the real deal. ie6 does work better then its competitors in given (corpo) environement.

btw, yes, where is opera? is anybody from opera on the phone with these people? or they are going to let it go? anyway – it is quite harsh indication of opera importance in modern wordl. nill.

    • Tiago Sá says:

IE6 worse than it is? Have you used it lately?!

      • nobody says:

        reading with comprehension lesson one:
if you dont understand a written word, read it again.
        lesson two:
it is possible, that others know more than you do

ie6 isnt a ‘mallware magnet’, it is possible, and quite easy in fact to be completely safe from mallware using even ie6. it isnt as easy with ff/opera/safari, but it is possible and many people can do that. especially admins in giant networks.

yes, it has old and hated engine, but in corporations it doesnt matter. what matters is a tight OS integration – sharepoint, exchange and other software that is despised by ignorants, but is vital in any big scale organisation.

and im really curious, if you have any KNOWLEDGE about why ie6 is so bad. because i think, that you only repeat opinions of others, without thinking too hard on them yourself. yes, ie6 is outdated browser that should go, browser that i dont like.

knowledge is now not cool amongst the young and shouty, that leads to world controled by mindless sheeps. dont be one of them.

  9. Nik says:

Massive campaign bla bla bla. If they are not trying just to take away from scene ie6 but push modern technologies why not to show banner for ie7 users as well?

  10. Fernando823 says:

    Where is Opera?????
Come on!!! This could not be serious!

  11. C says:

IE6 works just fine for me. I don’t need advanced web anyways. Granted I seldom use it, but I am currently using Firefox 2.0 since it does just what I need it to.

  12. Dels says:

This was good idea but like nobody said, corporate was the reason ie6 still alive and corporate ignore *tube, *book, *space (LOL)

I hope to see an Opera logo there (i’m loyal opera fans too, use it since 5.xx), but hey it’s not that hard for us, especially who have basic experience with html

So stop complaining on this site, you better complain on Weebly

  13. LOxEN says:

I was working on a joomla template just yesterday… after finishing i tried it on Firefox, Chrome and it worked just fine, then i tried it on Opera 9 and IE6 and the 2 browsers had the same bug :)) lol.. not cool… so i think that’s why opera isn’t in the list..

  14. Hangman says:

    Where is Opera? Damn!

  15. Tomas says:

    where is opera?

  16. PcBoy says:

Opera is not on there as its the worst browser! They only put decent browsers there. They are all decent browsers. Opera is just slow and horrible.

  17. Skythe says:

Opera does not steal & sell your data like Chrome, need 39458 plugins like FF and is not ugly and weird as Safari.

But almost, PcBoy. Almost got that right.
