One of the reasons Microsoft didn’t call the Xbox 360 the Xbox 2 is because some people would have thought that the PlayStation 3 is superior to the Xbox 2 simply due to the numbering. I wonder what will happen here once Chrome gets crazy far ahead of the other browsers in terms of version numbers.

  2. Opera 15
    IE 17
    FF 50
    Chrome ¡¡¡ NineThousand !!!

Unless Microsoft changes the way they handle version numbers, I doubt they’ll get ahead of Opera anytime soon!

      • WOFall says:

Traditionally it’s not so much how they handle version numbers, but how often they (don’t) release. Now that they have to race to catch up to versions, it’s certainly possible that IE17 might be around when Opera 15 is. IE is very unlikely to have .5 releases, whereas Opera probably will, as well as possibly having .1/.6 releases.

When you see the Chrome version number, just move the decimal one place to the left for a more accurate comparison of other, more typical numbering systems. I consider Chrome version 13 coming up as version 1.3 compared to Opera’s version 11.50.

Thank you Google for making version numbers rather meaningless and to Firefox for jumping on-board. (sarcasm intended)

Hmm I’m seeing a pattern here

  5. Brando says:

…Why? There is literally no reason for it. The version numbers rarely even increment to x.1 as it is and new versions hardly show any major change. I doubt 12 will be past 12.0.xxx before 13 is released… so why not just go to 12.1? It’s become a meaningless number at this point.

  6. Mikah says:

Chrome is developing at a fast pace but I no longer take much notice of the latest Chrome major release it’s just another point release not much different from the preceding one.
Pity Firefox felt it had to jump on the bandwagon.

What makes this funny is, that in this browser war Google will be releasing one new version every sixth week, and in comparisin, after the last browser war Micrsoft didn’t release a new version in six years.
I hope Google wins this. I really do.

I hate trying to do surveys on browsers. I ask someone “What browser do you use?” and it’s either, “aw, google?” or “I just open the internet!”
