Firefox Mobile Will Support H.264

Firefox Mobile Will Support H.264Surely Chrome will drop H.264. Let’s just wait.

Although Google has announced plans to phase out the support for H.264 on its Chrome web browser, those are still just plans.

Now, according to Mozilla’s CTO, Brendan Eich, the open source organization has also no plans for such drastic change and will continue supporting H.264 on its mobile web browser.

Why? Well, it all comes down to the pressure from competitors as he wrote, “H.264 is absolutely required right now to compete on mobile. I do not believe that we can reject H.264 content in Firefox on Android or in B2G and survive the shift to mobile. Losing a battle is a bitter experience. I won’t sugar-coat this pill. But we must swallow it if we are to succeed in our mobile initiatives.”

So basically, nothing changes and H.264 will continue to thrive on our handheld devices.

So they’re agreeing to disagree; Mozilla’s policy says they oppose support for patent-encumbered codecs but because the support is free (via the OS) they’ve decided to remain competitive.

I don’t know whether or not to take that as a good or bad thing.
