The European Commission, Browser Choice, and Fair PlayThe company behind Maxthon has filed a petition, asking the European Commission to change the way it counts web browser market share on Windows PCs.

According to the official blog post, when it comes to the browser ballot screen, the EC should only count the number of Apple Safari users on Windows and not Mac OS machines, as it gives an unfair advantage to Apple and hurts smaller parties.

As you might know, market share determines the top 5 positions of the browser ballot screen and for the company that claims to be the world’s 5th largest web browser maker on Windows PCs, it’s kind of a big deal.

By using data from Net Applications, web developers have put up a nice worldwide map which shows IE6 usage for every country.

With the release of Internet Explorer 9 RC, Microsoft has taken some share back, up from 56.00% to 56.77% (0.77 point increase).

While everyone awaits the final version of Firefox 4, an open source web browser continues the downtrend, from 22.75% to 21.74% (1.01 point decrease).

With a great year for web browsers that 2010 was, it’s time to dive in directly into 2011 and check the very first month market share stats.

Internet Explorer continues the downtrend with a 1.08 point drop, from 57.08% to 56.00%.

With the upcoming Firefox 4 release, Mozilla’s web browser is still struggling to gain any significant market share, this time it lost a 0.06 point, down from 22.81% to 22.75%.

With the approaching Internet Explorer 9 RC1 release date, IE team has recently revealed that Microsoft’s browser has been already downloaded more than 23 million times.

Furthermore, it looks like with a total 1.82% of Windows 7 users already using IE9, it has now reached 0.5% of the worldwide market share.
