Pwn2Own: Hacker Exploits IE8, Firefox, Safari

“He won a cash prize and got to keep the hardware. Details of the vulnerability, which was described by contest sponsor TippingPoint ZDI as a “brilliant IE8 bug!” are being kept under wraps.
“Nils” also scored a clean hit against Apple’s Safari (he was the second hacker to exploit Safari) and, later in the afternoon, he exploited a Firefox zero-day flaw to claim the trifecta.”
In case you are interested, Mac was hacked in 10 seconds.
Nothing about Opera or Chrome yet.

New Google Chrome Beta – 25-35% Faster
Here is some great news from Google Chrome team. The latest Chrome beta release was just released and it’s 25% faster on V8 benchmark and 35% faster on SunSpider.
Of course, it also includes some of the new features, for example: form autofill, full page zoom, autoscroll and drag tabs (see video and benchmark results below).

Internet Explorer Collection is basically a setup which contains standalone versions of various Internet Explorer versions, ranging from 1.0 to 8.0.
Random Thoughts on EU and MS Case
Just some random thoughts of mine. Some people might even call it troll-o-rama…
1. Where the line should be drawn? Should Windows include alternative browsers only? Or also alternatives to WordPad, Paint, Calculator, etc. as long as those are free?
2. If it happens that Microsoft will be forced to ship Windows with other web browsers, how many of the alternatives should it have? 5, 50, 500 or 5000?
3. If other people are not aware of other web browsers, such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome or Opera, what makes you think that they will actually select and trust “unknown” one during setup?
Rumor: Opera 10 to Include Web Slices
Tim (the guy who sent us “leaked” Opera 10 release dates (haven’t been confirmed as real yet)) today reported that the upcoming Opera 10 Beta release will include a feature similar to web slices.
If you haven’t heard about it yet, it allows you to track a specific part of page for changes. As a result, you won’t have to keep visiting it over and over again.

Quite informative post has been published recently on IE’s Blog which includes some of the IE7 and IE8 compatibility differences/issues as well as solutions on how to fix them.
Opera Chief: Microsoft’s IE 8 ‘Undermines’ Web Standards

Firefox 3.5 Receives an IRC Client
Latest Firefox 3.5 nightly releases now include Mibbit, a web IRC client. Once irc:// link is opened, user will be redirected to Mibbit for further steps.
In order to make it work, you will have to select Mibbit from Applications settings page in the Options menu.
